Architecture is defined as the 'art and science of designing and erecting buildings' and the ancient Romans were masters of Architecture - designing and erecting buildings.Their skills in building and engineering, including their invention of concrete, resulted in different types and styles of architecture including the building of forts, villas, temples, towns, baths, great walls and roads.The history of Ancient Roman Architecture was divided into two distinctive eras. The first era was of the Republic where the origins of the architecture of the Romans can be traced to the Etruscans, who migrated from Asia Minor to Italy in the 12th Century BC. The Arch
The Arch is a triumphal arch in Rome situated between the coliseum and the palatine hill. One of the early uses of the Roman arch was for the construction of Rome “aquaduct. It is 21 meters high. It was built To honor Constantine the Great for his victory over Maxentius in the Battle of Milvian Bridge. At the inside of the arch are two panels with reliefs. One depicts the triumphal procession with the spoils taken from the Second Temple in Jerusalem - the seven branched.
Coloseum
The Colosseum, which was originally named Flavian Amphitheater, is the most impressive building of the Roman Empire and the largest building of the era. It is also considered as the greatest work of Roman architecture and engineering. It has about 80 entrances and can accommodate 45,000 spectators. Colosseum is an elliptical building measuring 189 meters long and 156 meters wide with a base area of 24,000 m² with a height of more than 48 meter. The Colosseum was built in only 9 years. Began in 72AD and completed in 81AD. We struggle to build stadiums today in 9 years! The Colosseum was built by 60,000 Jewish slaves. Over 400,000 people died in the Colosseum in the 390 years it was open for entertainment. The Colosseum was opened for free to the Ancient Romans. Under ground they had machiner,weapons and elevators.
Aqueduct
As roman towns got bigger it became to hard for people to get clean water. Raw sewage was draining into rivers and when people drank river water they got sick or died. Then the government decided to build long stone channels to carry clean water from nearby hills to the towns. These stone channels were called aqueducts. The first aqueduct in the city of Rome was the Aqua Appia, built in 312 BC during the Roman Republic. The combined length of all the aqueducts built in ancient Rome is about 800 km (500 miles). However, only 47 km (29 miles) were above ground, as most Roman aqueducts ran beneath the surface of the ground. The aqueduct consists of three tiers of arches and was built out of limestone blocks without the use of mortar.
Pantheon
The pantheon is an example of Architecture. The pantheon is located in Rome, Italy. Its exterior and interior consists of brick. The dome on top of the pantheon consists of concrete. Within the middle of the dome is a hole. .Within the middle of the dome is a hole. The exterior of the Pantheon consists of Corinthians columns. As the brick stamps on the side of the building reveal it was built and dedicated between A.D 118 and 125.
